Over the past several months the Citrus Connection’s ridership numbers have increased at a steady pace, with the February totals hitting a new high.

During the month of February the Citrus Connection provided 5,433 rides per day. February of 2010’s total was 4,793 riders per day showing a substantial increase. A review of rides provided in 2008, which was historically a peak ridership year because gas prices went over $4 per gallon, show 5,336 rides per day provided in February. February, 2011 numbers reflect almost 100 rides per day more than 2008 and 640 additional rides per day when compared to February 2010.

“With gas prices on the rise” said Danny Ours, Executive Director, “we expect our ridership number to continue its upward climb. We know in 2008 when gas prices jumped, more people with personal vehicles investigated and rode public transit because it provided them a better value for their dollar. We also believe the current rider increase represents a return to work for riders we previously lost when the unemployment increased -- and we’re delighted to have them back and pleased to be here to serve them.”

The Lakeland Area Mass Transit District, doing business as the Citrus Connection, has been operating a public transit system in the Lakeland area for 29 years providing bus service to Lakeland and connecting the surrounding communities of Bartow, Auburndale and Winter Haven.
